Taking time for yourself: Selfish or necessary?

Self-development

Written by Sophie Parienti

If you’re usually in a rush, dissatisfied with your work, and think you put others before yourself, it’s time to reevaluate.

Burnout is common today, and self-care is neglected in our fast-paced environment. But we must remember that caring for ourselves is our responsibility to be able to show up our best in the world.

And if you are not convinced of the need to take time for yourself, here are some arguments that will make you look at things differently. You will have then to follow my advice to integrate this time out into your routine.

Why should you take a break?

1. To clear your mind.

Daily information overload has made our brains unable to discern what is beneficial from what is useless. Taking a break and calming your mind helps de-clutter and reduce the stress and anxiety caused by too much uncertainty.

Isolating yourself to clear your mind calms your emotions and allows you to refocus on yourself. Then it is possible to become aware of what needs to be managed in your mind and life.

2. To better understand yourself

By taking time for yourself and detaching yourself from societal, family, or professional expectations, you can understand your needs and identify what works for you and doesn’t. What do you believe in? What are your strengths and weaknesses? What are your hobbies and passions? What brings you satisfaction or joy?

It can be an opportunity to break out of your habitual patterns and eliminate the preconceived notions of yourself to connect with your authentic self.

3. To boost your self-confidence

Stepping out of your comfort zone allows you to think about trips, weekends, new hobbies, and other things you would never have considered. By dreaming more, you achieve your goals and become happier, prouder, and more fulfilled. It has the effect of boosting your self-confidence.

4. To better overcome obstacles.

When we are caught in a chaotic environment and are advised from all sides, making decisions about our challenges can be difficult. Finding the calm we need to organize our thoughts, connect to our authentic selves and regain our self-esteem makes it easier to identify, confront and resolve our challenges.

5. To be more available to others.

Being more present for others involves finding a sense of calm and availability within ourselves. It means stepping away from the busyness of life and taking time to prioritize our needs. Just like the safety instructions on a plane advise us to put on the oxygen mask on ourselves before helping others, I urge you to give yourself time to be more fully present for those around you.

Ready to take some time to relax?

That’s great! Here are some tips and habits that will make a difference.

1. Be aware of the inner voice.

If you’re still reading, you’re probably thinking about self-care. But your ego may be whispering doubts and excuses, telling you that only lazy people take breaks or that you can’t afford to waste time. These justifications do not allow you to prioritize your health. Remind yourself that taking a break doesn’t mean the world will stop; it can provide you with newfound energy and clarity.

2. Calculate your break time.

Based on your daily duties, decide how much time to allow yourself. Do you have 15-30 minutes daily, three times a week, or a weekend afternoon to devote yourself?

To find this time, eliminate redundant activities like 10 minutes from your social media!

  • Add this to your self-care time.
  • Start with a short time and enjoy it.
  • Sticking to your pace is crucial.
3. Determine the best timing.

When do you have the most time—morning, evening, or lunch break? It’s your choice, and avoid scheduling around essential tasks like picking up the kids or walking the dog. Hence, you can relax during “me” time.

4. Delegate.

You may struggle since eliminating tasks means surrendering control, which makes you feel protected. No one’s indispensable. Try delegating responsibilities at home and work to save time.

5. Be compassionate with yourself.

Practicing self-compassion is crucial when trying to change habits, as it is common to encounter resistance and setbacks. If you find it challenging, it’s essential not to be too hard on yourself. Instead, offer yourself the same kindness and understanding you would give a dear friend who needs support.

Take time to acknowledge and reward yourself for your progress, focusing on your strengths and regularly celebrating your successes. The more compassionate you are towards yourself, the easier it will be to navigate challenges and reach your goals.

6. Set boundaries.

Establishing boundaries is crucial. By defining your limits and gently declining requests or engagements that do not align with your principles or objectives, you will have more room for what truly matters, especially your leisure time. Practicing this with kindness can significantly impact your life, bringing you a sense of comfort and relief.

What will you do with your newfound time?

In a coaching session to answer the question above, I would first urge you to consider these two questions:

  • What inspires you?
  • When do time and space disappear?

Addressing these two questions will clarify how to appreciate time alone. But some vastly efficient and enjoyable activities can reset your day:

1. Sleep well, and sleep more.

Neglecting your sleep time can harm your overall well-being, and getting a good night’s sleep is a precious time to enjoy. It is, therefore, essential to get into the habit of going to bed at a reasonable time that does not require waking up in the morning. And if necessary, take a short break during the day to rest. Taking ten minutes to rest is enough to give you a boost of energy.

2. Meditate/yoga.

I write about these habits because they provide me joy and daily well-being. These are the most effective tools for finding calm and serenity. Several online tutorials assist you in starting. 3. Exercise.

Endurance, swimming, dancing, and walking increase endorphin generation, boost your mood, and start a cycle of positivity.

4. Allow inventiveness.

You have artistic potential. Let your creativity shine. Your creativity will astound you. Write, draw, sculpt, or knit—anything you enjoy is good for you.

5. Treat yourself.

A haircut, massage, face mask, manicure, pedicure, hot bath, or anything else that makes you feel better can boost your self-esteem and well-being. Hence, indulge in self-care activities that make you feel rejuvenated.

Enjoying your time out and finding creative and self-care balance is the ultimate goal of allowing time for yourself! Choosing what to do with your time shouldn’t be a chore, so let you be driven by the pleasure and excitement of being kind to yourself. If relaxing and doing nothing makes you happy, do it.

Conclusion.

As a coach and entrepreneur with numerous enterprises, I know that taking time for ourselves can be difficult in today’s world. Our culture values action over quiet, making rest seem sluggish or useless.

Yet, self-care and spending time recharging our natural batteries would help us be a better humans for this world. When we are calm and rejuvenated, we can give more to others.

After reading this, consider how it will benefit others if you’re still afraid to take time for yourself. Self-care helps you care for others and spread happiness and joy to your relationship, family, and community.

Take charge of your life and escape the everyday grind by allowing this precious time to care for yourself and pursue a life filled with pleasure and contentment.
